As a general rule radio communications can be used 'back to back' (radio to radio) to cover several square miles of open ground. Naturally the power, aerial type and frequency of the equipment influences radio signal coverage. Licensing is uncomplicated and inexpensive while certain low powered handsets are available licence free. As a simple form of low cost communications for factory or open site use, radio is hard to beat and, as it costs nothing to make calls. In 'back to back' form two-way radio is probably the most economical form of instant voice communications.
More efficient radio coverage of large sites and widespread areas, such as cities or regions, is achieved through use of repeater stations that are often installed on elevated sites. In this way community repeaters provide wide area radio communications coverage for company personnel needing to keep in touch with vehicles or individuals region-wide i.e. transport, utility and security operations. Similarly larger industrial concerns may find that in order to provide adequate coverage of their sprawling sites repeaters may be necessary.
Radio is an extremely flexible and adaptable means of communication. A few of the numerous options available to tailor a system to meet customer needs include:
Select Call
(Selcall) enables radio users to address a specific individual or group without involving others on the system unnecessarily.
Telephone Interface
Where a radio system is operating with a repeater or base station it is possible to install a telephone interface - with obvious benefits. Key personnel using radio may be contacted by telephone and vice versa which means that reporting incidents, breakdowns, or emergencies is both quick and easy.
