Preventative Maintenance Case Study

Preventative Maintenance

Business Challenge
A local authority recently approached Eemits Communications to look at ways to minimise the risk of their 2-way radio system malfunctioning causing a potential health and safety risk to employees when required to work alone.
Solution
Eemits and the local authority met to discuss the problems that could be encountered, if the radio system failed. These included; employees not being able to request for back-up when working alone and the potential of being harmed by a member of the public. The local authority had a duty of care to protect their employees.
After discussions were completed, Eemits devised the authority a maintenance package that was bespoke to them to cater for the needs of their employees to ensure that they were put in as little risk as possible.
Eemits devised a ‘healthcheck’ as part of the maintenance package for their 2-way radio system, this would help to ensure that many problems such as battery failure or faulty transmission signals could be eliminated before the posed any threat to the employees. The ‘healthcheck’ ensured that the radios were working fully and included checks on; the radio, antenna, battery, charging unit, software and firmware. All checks were completed by an Eemits specialist 2-way radio engineer and would be recorded for auditing purposes.
Results
After reviewing the proposal put together for the local authority, it was decided that a yearly ‘healthcheck’ as part of their maintenance package was the way to go in helping to eliminate potential problems occurring on their 2-way radio system.
During the healthcheck conducted by an Eemits engineer, a few problems were highlighted. One of the tests conducted showed that there was an issue with some of the batteries used to power the radios. The lack of power was affecting the transmission of the radios.
The batteries were replaced as part of the maintenance package, which stopped all the transmission faults and avoided anyone being put at risk should they have failed.

Benefits

Due to the vigilance of the Eemits engineer, a potential risk to our employees was averted and didn’t have an impact on the downtime of the radio system. I can highly recommend having a ‘healthcheck’ for your 2-way radio system as part of your maintenance package.
