Knife Crime in Northern Schools: Early Intervention Starts With Education

10/04/2025
Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

Knife crime in Northern England’s schools remains a serious and growing concern, with rising incidents threatening the safety and well-being of both pupils and staff.

Tackling this issue demands early intervention through education. Many are now calling for the curriculum to be updated, urging that PSHE lessons include information on serious youth violence, including knife crime.

To understand the scale of the problem, we submitted Freedom of Information requests to police forces across Northern England. The data we received offers a stark view of knife-related incidents taking place in schools and reinforces why education reform is urgently needed.

Knife Crime in Northern Schools between September 2021 - September 2024

Between September 2021 and September 2024, Northern schools reported alarming rates of knife-related incidents, including possession, threats, and attacks. Shockingly, the youngest reported age for those involved is just seven years old, highlighting the early onset of this troubling issue.

Although the overall number of school knife crime cases saw a slight decline from September 2021 - September 2022 to September 2022 - September 2023, the issue remains far from resolved.

West Yorkshire reported a total of 222 knife crimes during this period

Over the three year period, school knife crime across North England posed a significant challenge, with West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire emerging as the most affected regions. These areas reported the highest rates of knife-related incidents, including possession, threats, and violent attacks, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty within school communities.

Children as young as 7 years old have been involved in knife-related incidents

One of the most disturbing aspects of knife crime in schools is the age of those involved. While the majority of offenders fall within the 10–16-year-old range, some incidents have shockingly involved children as young as seven. This raises urgent questions about how and why such young children are drawn into knife-related activity.

Many factors contribute to this troubling trend, including exposure to violence at home or in the community, peer pressure, and the normalisation of knife carrying as a form of protection. In some cases, young offenders are manipulated by older individuals, including gang members, who exploit their vulnerability.

Positive Progress: A Decline Since 2021

Despite these alarming statistics, there is a silver lining, as knife crime in schools seems to have decreased slightly since September 2021 - September 2022.

Various factors may have contributed to this reduction. Increased awareness campaigns in schools and communities have played a role in educating young people about the dangers and consequences of knife crime. Collaborative efforts between schools and local police forces, including the introduction of school liaison officers, have also helped deter violent incidents.

Additionally, targeted programs aimed at at-risk youth, such as mentorship initiatives and workshops on conflict resolution, have begun to address the root causes of knife-related violence.

Why Early Education Is Key to Preventing Youth Violence and Knife Crime

Knife Crime Awareness Week returned in May this year with a clear message: Knife crime is preventable.

As more children and young people become victims of knife crime, many are highlighting the importance of educating young people on knife dangers.

In July, County Durham teenager, Ellie Johnson, travelled to Parliament to present a youth violence report to MPs. The MPs present were asked to consider updating the curriculum for PSHE lessons to include topics on serious youth violence, such as knife crime.

There’s many more recent initiatives that are helping educate young people on the dangers of knives, not just present in schools, but in the wider community.

West Yorkshire Police have educated thousands of children on the dangers of knife crime.

- Awarded through CURV (Cleveland Unit for the Reduction of Violence), many charity and community groups recently received funding including MFC Foundation and ARC Stockton for school initiatives and workshops.

Merseyside Police also launched an innovative VR project that brings knife crime consequences to life, educating over 1,000 young people.

- Knife Angel also arrived in County Durham for the first time this year and was unveiled in Newton Aycliffe in June. The statue, made up of 100,000 surrendered blades from knife amnesties, was deeply meaningful to many families. Its haunting presence aims to educate and inspire change.

Making Schools Safe Again

School knife crime across North England remains a pressing issue that demands urgent attention. Educating children and young people on knife dangers, both in and outside of school, will help raise awareness and reduce violent crime.

Alongside knife crime education, efficient communication and security measures on school premises can help staff respond quickly to incidents that occur. Tom Bradley, of Eemits Communications, emphasises the urgency of tackling knife crime in Northern schools:

"The statistics on knife crime for Northern schools are a real eye-opener. To know that so many schools face a reality where people can be seriously hurt or even killed is incredibly alarming.”

"Everyone wants schools to be a safe environment for students and staff. Our advice, as a business that supports schools with two-way communication needs, is for schools to ensure they have the right communication tools in place to support with things like raising alarms, reducing response times, and triggering lockdown protocols at speed."

South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire are already tackling knife crime in Cleveland schools and seeing significant improvements. A combination of community engagement, effective security measures, and educational programmes is helping address high knife crime.

While the decline in incidents is an encouraging sign, the persistent high numbers of school knife crimes, especially among children as young as seven, highlight the need for continued vigilance and action. By prioritising safety and fostering a culture of care and responsibility, we can create a brighter, safer future for all students.

Methodology:

Through a Freedom of Information request, we contacted Northern police forces and requested the following information: Data relating to crime involving knives and bladed articles, specifically in education facilities: schools and colleges (primary, secondary, college, public & private), within their jurisdiction boundaries, for the period from September 2021 to September 2024.

We requested data on the following categories for each year in the specified time period:

- Possession of bladed articles/knives on school premises - The number of recorded incidents where individuals were found in possession of bladed articles, knives or other offensive weapons on school premises.

- Threats involving bladed articles/knives - The number of recorded incidents involving threats made with bladed articles, knives or other offensive weapons on school premises.

- Attacks, incidents or injuries involving bladed articles/knives - The number of recorded attacks or incidents involving bladed articles, knives or other offensive weapons on school premises. Plus any data on injuries caused during these incidents (e.g., minor injuries, serious injuries).

We requested knife crime data from 9 police forces in North England (West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside, Northumbria, Cleveland, Humberside, Cumbria, Lancashire, Durham).
