Two-Way Radio: 4 Genius Ways It's Been Used

30/11/2022
Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

Throughout time the trusty two-way radio has been used for a variety of reasons, and by people from all walks of life. In this day and age you often see them being used in a professional sense - commonly in sectors such as emergency services, chemical manufacturing, construction, and utilities.

But you probably don't think of seeing them being used quite like the 4 genius examples we've scoured the internet for. Here's some of the most innovative ways a two-way radio has been used. In all instances you have to applaud the sense of creativity on display.

Luis Enrique communicating with the Spanish men's national team

Most people wouldn’t normally associate a two-way radio with a football training session, but in this instance, the use of such device is incredibly clever.

The men’s Spanish national team is led by legendary midfielder, Luis Enrique. Known for his unconventional methods, the former Barcelona star decided to put two-way radio technology to good use.

Rather than having to be in the thick of the action, Enrique adopted an approach where he could communicate with players from a higher vantage point – firing instructions out to players via a two-way radio.

In order to reach his players, Enrique had them attach radio devices to the back of their sports performance garment. And instead of having to stop play, Enrique would simply speak into his radio and give players pointers about their performance.

A genius way of maximising training output and getting important instructions to his stars without having to stop their momentum. And if you’ve watched them so far in the 2022 World Cup, then it appears to be paying dividends.

The avocado-shaped walkie talkie

Yes, you read that correctly. A walkie talkie shaped like an avocado. What started out as a joke by its creator, Andrew Nelson, ended up being a crowdfunding reality.

Officially named the Guac-e Talk-e Walkie Talkie, the prototype of the device was made in Guatemala City and appealed to both the younger market and Millennials – well the ones who hold the avocado close to their heart.

Its fun appearance made the everyday two-way radio more appealing to look at, but in terms of practically it was simply a “standard” two-way radio with the appearance of a key ingredient for a tasty guacamole.

Despite receiving plenty of press in 2017, the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign never received the desired funding for the product to hit consumer shelves.

Nonetheless, it’s a great example of how creative people can be to make a niche market more appealing to everyday people – especially the ones who love themselves some avocados.

Filipino educators pick up innovation award

We travel all the way to the Philippines for this next example of two-way radios being used in a clever way.

Mary Hazel Ballena, the Principal of Bucay North Elementary School, Abra, developed the TEACH TALK system to help young people to reach out to teachers and learners despite the lack of internet access.

Thinking outside the box, every student received a handheld two-way radio. The hardware devices were used to deliver lessons, conduct assessments, and carry our parental orientation and meeting.

The scheme was so successful that learner performance improved throughout the year. The students managed to increase their school performance in every subject.

Now that’s a smart way to use smart technology. Hats off to the school, as they picked up an award for innovation in the process.

Man pranks woman with walkie talkie in supermarket car park

We’ve had football training sessions, avocado-shaped devices, school children boosting their learning capabilities – and now we’ve got a man tricking a woman into thinking she needed to use facial recognition software to pay for parking.

TikTok user Daniel Green, placed one walkie talkie on top of the pay and display machine, then waited in a nearby van with the other.

In doing so, he made it appear as if the voice of the first walkie talkie was coming from the machine.

He then proceeded to ask the lady to perform various actions, such as turning her head, and doing a 360 turn.

He eventually let on that it was a prank and, in the process, showed just how creative you can be with a two-way radio, even if it was just for a laugh.

And those are just a few genius ways that the trusty two-way radio has been used. As an expert in the field we applaud their creativity - but we'll stick to coming up with ultra-smart solution for other businesses and leave them to their own ideas.
