Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

Introduction to the company 

Founded in 1985, Whitby Seafoods is a proud, independent family company valued for their straight-talking, honest approach to business. They are famous for their ‘proper Scampi’, which is caught off the coast of the British Isles and made with authentic British langoustine. 

As the UK’s leading Scampi manufacturer, Whitby Seafoods was named one of the London Stock Exchange’s ‘1000 Companies to Inspire’. The report is a celebration of the fastest growing and most dynamic small- to medium-sized enterprises in the UK. To be included on the list, companies need to show consistent growth over a minimum of three years, significantly outperforming their industry peers.

The Challenge

As Whitby Seafoods’ sales increased, so did the size and complexity of their physical operations. To ensure that daily production ran smoothly, they sought an experienced partner with a demonstrated history of communications excellence. 

The unprecedented growth of Whitby Seafoods meant that many legacy operations and procedures had to be revised or removed. With a long history in food manufacturing, we were in an ideal position to develop and deploy innovative, sustainable communication solutions that could evolve with the business.

The Solution

After a thorough appraisal of their existing system, we concluded that it should be upgraded from a simple back-to-back (direct mode) digital system to a single-site conventional digital repeater system. 

This coverage would clear up the black spots created by the physical expansion of their premises. We also overlaid TRBOnet Enterprise software to improve workforce safety and drive operational efficiency. 

When workers enter and leave on-site cold storage and process areas, they need to know they can rely on the radio system to raise an alarm, which colleagues can act on quickly. Specifically, worker safety was improved by the lone worker, panic alarm and man-down features offered by the deployed Motorola DP4801e radios. 

In the event of an emergency, these safety features interact with TRBOnet’s external GPS and internal location software to give the PC dispatcher the exact location of the worker in need. 

For interior locations, the system worked with the DP4801e’s embedded Bluetooth feature and strategically placed i-Beacons. Several smartphones — with the TRBOnet mobile client application installed on them — were also paired with the alarms. This meant that alarm notifications could be pushed off-site outside of business hours, giving on-site workers peace of mind that their welfare was always being monitored. 

The single-site conventional digital repeater system has also helped drive efficiency for Whitby Seafoods. The access control gate now has a call-point that allows visitors and delivery personnel to communicate directly with radio users on-site. Because every moment counts, this feature is essential for quick delivery and dispatch of fresh and frozen produce. 

For improved security, the access barrier is controlled by on-site radio users with the DP4801e telemetry function. Once the radio user has received a message from the access call point, they can lift the barrier with a single press of the button and vice versa. The success of the telemetry action is confirmed by a text acknowledgment over the radio. 

To confirm the person’s identity at the call point, a TRBOnet IP camera module was installed. This required the set-up of a high-quality IP CCTV camera, mounted in a strategic location with an unobstructed view of the access area. The camera feed could then be monitored in real-time using the TRBOnet PC dispatcher.

The Results

By not having to constantly monitor or send staff to access points, Whitby Seafoods has significantly reduced downtime and optimised manpower. Improved safety conditions have led to improved productivity, proactivity and overall efficiency. 

The communications system is a 5-year, fully managed solution, with all Motorola products covered by their enhanced warranty for accidental cover. This ensures that any defective product is repaired and returned to Whitby Seafoods within 3 days. The managed service also covers reactive maintenance: any on-site problems receive a response within a pre-agreed SLA time, and the integrity of the system is checked with a planned preventative maintenance appraisal. 

Ultimately, our experience in the wider food manufacturing industry and our close collaboration with the Whitby Seafoods team made all the difference. These determining factors helped us to create a communications solution that was tailored for Whitby Seafoods rather than a one-size-fits-all approach frequently adopted by other resellers.
