Utilities: Use Intelligent Audio to Work Smarter On Site
Energy and utility companies aren’t discreet in nature. In fact, they're the opposite. They're big in size (both structurally and financially) and are loud when it comes to their influence on the daily lives of people across the UK.
And that last point is true in more ways than one. Away from the loud influence the sector has on society and economy, you have the loud working environments in which they operate. Think of onshore and offshore wind farms or nuclear power plants and water treatment plants, and you can imagine how loud it can be to work on these sites.
Today, we complete our Utilities Pain Points series by taking a look at Intelligent Audio – a smart feature that is designed to help you achieve more in an environment that produces consistent loud noise levels.
Radio audio and its intelligence
In loud environments, radio volume will automatically be increased, so a worker is able to hear what the other person is saying without having to worry about having to stop and change the volume settings of the device.
If a worker has their device volume set to high, but is in a quite environment, then Intelligent Audio will monitor the environment and automatically reduce the noise.
Noise cancellation provides workers with a smart solution for better speech transmission. Using the radio’s built-in microphone, advanced audio processing technology is used in order to reduce background noise.
Don’t raise your voice
Energy and utility companies operate in high-pressure environments, so workers can sometimes raise their voice to make sure the person can hear them – especially if either person is wearing ear protection.
With a feature known as Automatic Gain Control (AGC), this isn’t necessary. AGC will automatically adjust the microphone level of the radio in operation, so noise levels are more reasonable.
When two or more radio users are too close together, and one of them speaks via their ATEX radio, their voice will cause uncomfortable interference – in the form of annoying looping and howling noises. To prevent this happening, acoustic feedback suppression can be enabled to ensure teamwork can carry on at pace.
Designated 'high noise' areas
Working in a noisy environment isn't something to take for granted. It can be frustrating for workers who are trying to get on with their job, but it can also be a matter of health and safety. When noise is particularly high, we recommend that you introduce a solution that can cancel out background noise and offer protection for your workforce. Heavy-duty headsets will give your workers added protection when they're operating in noisy surroundings. They're also rugged in design, so are ideal for harsher environments.
The decibel dilemma
The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 sets the legal limit of 85 decibels in the workplace. If levels go any higher than that, employees must provide ear protection to their staff. If decibel levels reach 80 then training must be provided to help workers understand how high noise levels can impact them and their work.
For workers to communicate without disruption, they must be able to talk to each other throughout their shift. If noisy machinery or equipment is preventing important conversations from taking place, then productivity will suffer - along with safety and efficiency.
