ATEX: Use Intelligent Audio to be Heard Loud and Clear

Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

Chemical processing isn’t a new concept. In fact, you can go as far back as 1736, when pharmacist Joshua Ward developed a process for the industrial production of sulfuric acid, to realise how long it’s been around.

But, whilst processing pre-dates the industrial revolution, there’s one revolution that can still be tapped into – the technological revolution. To help businesses and their workers be more efficient, a smart solution that caters for noisy environments must be introduced.

Today, we go further into our ATEX 12 pain points series to bring you a blog on Intelligent Audio and how it’s designed to help you achieve more in an environment that produces high noise levels.

The intelligence of radio audio

So, Intelligent Audio, what is it? Well, like the name suggests, Intelligent Audio is a smart feature of ATEX radio devices that uses intelligence to work out when to increase or decrease radio volume, depending on the environment you’re in.

Loud environments

In loud environments, the feature will automatically increase the volume, so a worker is able to hear what the other person is saying whilst operating in a business-critical area that’s noisy.

Quiet environments

If a worker is in quieter surroundings, but has their volume set to high, then the feature will monitor the environment and automatically reduce it as the worker will still be able to hear on a lower setting.

Noise cancellation for transmitting messages

Again, to help combat the noisy environments you operate in, noise cancellation provides a smart solution for improving speech transmission. Using the ATEX radio’s built-in microphone, advanced audio processing technology is used to reduce background noise.

No need to raise your voice

In high-pressure environments, workers can raise their voice to make sure the person on the other end can hear them – especially when they’re near loud machinery or wearing ear defenders. But, with something known as Automatic Gain Control (AGC), this isn’t necessary.

AGC will automatically adjust the microphone level on the radio being used for transmission, so louder sounds are kept at a reasonable level.

Feedback suppression

When two or more radio users are too close together, and one of them speaks via their ATEX radio, their voice will cause uncomfortable interference – in the form of annoying looping and howling noises. To prevent this happening, acoustic feedback suppression can be enabled to ensure teamwork can carry on at pace.

High noise designated areas

When working in a noisy environment, especially one where decibel levels go beyond the legal limit of 85, you need a solution that can cancel out noise and offer protection for workers.

Heavy-duty headsets provide the perfect solution as an accessory in this scenario, as they help protect your ears whilst in noisy surroundings and will also reduce background noises in the process.

Drowning out the decibels

Due to the nature of chemical manufacturing, day-to-day processes can result in a noisy working environment that makes it difficult for people to hear each other.

One study in 2019 found that noise levels within chemical manufacturing ranged between 85 and 115 decibels – with The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 setting the limit in the UK at the 85 mark.

To help you understand how noisy this can be for people on-site, 115 decibels is the equivalent of being at a live rock concert – but without the enjoyment of playing the air guitar.

For workers to communicate effectively, they need to be able talk at any time during their shift. if noisy machines or equipment is stopping important conversations from taking place, then productivity can suffer, and so can safety and efficiency.

Radio’s role in a mobile world

The radio v mobile debate for business-critical communication is one that will always rumble on. But, for chemical manufacturers, the choice is made simpler – as smartphones aren’t smart enough in this situation.

Whilst a mobile phone has several uses, it doesn’t include the ability to automatically increase or decrease volume based on the surroundings you’re in.

As our Digital Radio v Mobile Phone document shows, there’s a range of pros to using a radio in a world where mobiles might not be fit for purpose. One of those pros is Intelligent Audio.
