3 Comms Considerations for Offshore Wind Farms

11/10/2023
Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

In this blog, we’ll explore three key aspects of wind farm communication networks: turbine requirements, onshore O&M bases, and ship-to-shore connectivity. These considerations are not only vital for offshore wind but also align with broader offshore communication best practices that apply to industries such as oil and gas.

Offshore Wind Turbine Communication Requirements

One of the most important factors in wind farm communication is choosing the right system for turbine connectivity. Many operators default to Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) over Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) without realising the significant differences in cost, coverage, and infrastructure.

TETRA struggles to penetrate wind farms effectively, meaning extensive infrastructure must be installed offshore. By contrast, DMR requires far fewer sites to deliver reliable coverage. To put it into perspective, it takes around seven TETRA sites to cover the same area as just two DMR sites.

Through DMR, we can deploy our TRBOCALL rapid deployment system, which minimises infrastructure requirements while providing extensive voice and data capabilities. This makes it a cost-effective solution for offshore communication systems where speed and reliability are critical.

For more on the differences, see Ofcom’s guidance on spectrum use, which highlights why efficient communication technologies are vital offshore.

Onshore O&M Base Communication

The Operations & Maintenance (O&M) phase of an offshore wind farm is critical to both safety and productivity. Once turbines are in place, effective wind farm communication networks become essential to support ongoing operations.

The O&M base acts as the central hub, coordinating:

    Ship-to-Shore Communication

An offshore wind farm operates much like a large-scale puzzle, with multiple moving parts that need to connect seamlessly. Vessels such as CSOVs, SOVs, and ISVs play a critical role in construction, installation, and servicing, and all rely on robust ship-to-shore communication.

This is typically achieved through VHF marine radios, which provide:
Our team has fitted numerous vessel solutions for major projects, ensuring seamless offshore wind farm communications across entire fleets. For example, at Dogger Bank and Neart Na Gaoithe (NnG), we’ve delivered installations that keep construction and support vessels connected at every stage of development.

      Offshore Communication Best Practices

When it comes to offshore communication systems, there are several best practices project leaders should follow:
      • Choose scalable solutions – DMR systems can grow as project needs evolve.
      • Prioritise redundancy – back-up systems ensure continuous coverage in emergencies.
      • Integrate ship-to-shore and site comms – for a unified communication network.
      • Select rugged equipment – radios must withstand offshore conditions.
These practices don’t just apply to wind farms but are also relevant to offshore oil rig communications, where safety and uptime are equally critical.

Eemits – Specialists in Wind Farm Communication

At Eemits Communications, we specialise in designing and delivering tailored wind farm communication networks that meet the unique demands of offshore projects. We’ve worked with leading energy providers such as EDF Renewables, delivering solutions for both UK and international projects.

      Our recent work includes:
      • Neart Na Gaoithe (NnG): Implementing communication solutions for O&M bases, substations, and vessels.
      • Dogger Bank: Rapid deployment of comms systems for GE Renewables at their turbine construction base and O&M site.

By choosing DMR over TETRA, we’ve helped providers deploy faster, more reliable, and cost-effective offshore communication systems – ensuring operational continuity and safety.
