Motorola Radios: 3 Things You MUST Consider Before Buying

Available under the Motorola Solutions brand, Motorola radios are some of the most technologically advanced two-way radios on the market.

But when it comes to which Motorola radio is the right for you, there’s 3 things you must consider before opting for a product or solution.

In this blog we’ll outline the key things to look out for before you decide which two-way communication device is going to boost safety, productivity, and efficiency for your business or workplace.

Environmental factors

Let’s start with the environment in which you’ll use a two-way radio. Motorola radios come in different shapes and sizes – as in there’s different models that are suited to different environments.

Licenced v licence-free

On a basic level you’ve got licenced radios and licence-free radios. And if you’re a business that needs secure comms, then it wouldn’t be suitable to use a licence-free device.

A licenced radio will give you 4 watts of power output, whilst a licence-free alternative will only give you 0.5 watts. This is important if you have vast amounts of space and physical obstacles to over come (thick structures, hills, multi-storey buildings as examples).

Other environmental factors include how harsh your surroundings are. If you’re in the petrochemical industry or the food manufacturing space then you’ll need something that is rugged and has a good IP rating.

On the other hand, if you’re in an industry like hospitality and retail a wearable device, that’s discreet and nimble, will be more practical.

Whatever your industry, you should always work out what’s the most suitable model for how you’ll use it. Think practicality, durability, reliability, and suitability when you research Motorola radios.

Key features

The beauty of digital two-way radios is that they can come packed full of smart features – ones that go beyond the realms of basic voice communication. Ones that focus on safety, productivity, and efficiency.

Safety first

Worker safety is high priority for all businesses. And with a Motorola radio you have the benefit of access to a range of safety features:

Lone worker

Panic alarm

‘Man down’

Location tracking

Geofencing

Transmit interrupt

Extended alarm management

Text messaging

So, if worker safety can be improved by using certain Motorola radios, then always look at which one has the most relevant safety features for your needs.

Noise levels

Noise in the workplace can de detrimental, so it’s important that you have the right tools in place to counteract it.

For example, if you’re working in a manufacturing environment where noise levels can go beyond 80 decibels then you don’t want to be stuck using a device that doesn’t take background noise into account.

Opting for a Motorola radio that has intelligent audio – where the radio volume is automatically turned up or down depending on the background noise - will ensure the job at hand is never 'stop, start'.

In the scenario where noise levels are rarely an issue, opting for a device with a super loud speaker or intelligent audio may be overkill, as models with these features often cost more.

Make sure the price is right

Finding the right radio at the right price can sometimes feel like you’re on a gameshow. But in reality it’s important that you choose a device that is suitable for your environment.

If, for example, you’re working on a large site where there’s multiple buildings and a range of risk factors, then using a cheap, licence-free device is not going to be beneficial. In fact it may even be dangerous.

On the flip side, if you’re working in a smaller space (like a school or small warehouse) then something complex that requires large amounts of infrastructure is unlikely to be necessary.

At the same time, you may just need basic voice capabilities so getting a device that has a range of features and software solutions may be overkill.

As a rule of thumb, the more a radio costs the more it’s capable of doing. And this includes things like IP rating, build quality, and technology.

Working with the right partner

Choosing the right solution can be a bit of a head scratcher. If you're not an expert in two-way radios it can be become a minefield in respect to picking the appropriate model and system. On this basis it's important you work with the right partner to find the most effective (and cost-effective) solution for your working environment.
