3 Emergency Response Solutions for An ATEX Site

Eemits Requalifies for SafeContractor Accreditation

Emergency response solutions on an ATEX-rated site must be taken seriously. Combine the dangers of working in a potentially explosive environment with the vast amounts of space, and maze-like structures and you have a situation where medical and non-medical incidents become harder to react to - and prevent the worst case scenario from happening.

In this blog, we're going to discuss three emergency response solutions on an ATEX site, with both non-medical and medical scenarios covered. Continue reading to find out how you could implement a solution that will reduce the impact of incidents unfolding on site.

Extend the reach to react in good time

A sophisticate alarm management system is something that all ATEX-rated sites should have in place. As an example, If there's a fire, the fire response team should be notified first - with other teams notified of an ongoing incident once the facts have been established.

The beauty of having an ultra-smart two-way radio system in place, is that exactly this can happen with an extended alarm management system in place.

There won't be many scenarios where it's best practice to only let one or two people know about an incident. If you're grouping people into teams, the smarter way to do things is to alert exactly the right people at the right time. This can be done via either a panic alarm or via text messaging, depending on what the situation calls for.

Either set of features will work best depending on the scenario - especially when it comes to getting the alert or message out at speed. No time can be wasted, no matter how severe the incident may be.

Reducing response time during a medical emergency

Medical problems that require urgent attention can cause real issues for workers on an ATEX site. Factors such as vast space, multiple structures, and confined spaces make it harder to know when someone has taken ill.

Episodes involving the heart can occur without a second's notice, and it's vital that workers in a critical condition are located and helped immediately. Not only does the person need immediate attention, but the right people have to be alerted at the right time.

If workers are located across the site, it can be difficult to react as quickly as possible to the problem. This is where an effective two-way communication solution can be put in place to reduce response time in emergency situations.

In a scenario where a worker doesn't have immediate access to a radio, they would normally have to walk on foot to alert the control room of a problem. To solve this, two-way radio base station units can be strategically placed in areas of the site where there's medical equipment such as a defibrilator.

This means the worker who previously didn't have access to a radio, can now contact the control room and reduce the time it takes for either further help to arrive, or for emergency services to be called. And in those scenarios where it's a heart problem, the use of a defibrilator can be put into practice.

Intercept with Telephone Interconnect

In a high-risk, hazardous environment, it's not only important to alert the right people on site, but those off-site too. Having the reliable coverage of ATEX two-way radios is one thing, but being able to communicate with other device types off-site is a different ball game.

A feature known as Telephone Interconnect does exactly this. It helps radio users communicate with others outside the coverage area - i.e., mobile phone users and landline users. If you need to get the message across to staff at a nearby office, HQ, or separate site (where a mix of devices are used) then this is a feature worth investing in.

Like in all emergency situations, having the ability to reduce response time is priceless.
